Rita* always had very good academic results, but her mother felt that, from a certain point, she could no longer support her.
Because she grew up in foster care and didn’t do much schooling, Rita`s mother realized she didn’t know how to keep up with her daughter’s educational demands. Because Rita’s father was out of the country, as she couldn’t rely on anyone else, Rita`s mother knocked on the door of the educational center supported by United Way. Here, not only did Rita get what she needed, guidance on homework and better learning skills, but also the mother got involved in the center`s activities. She attended parenting classes and many activities out of a desire to give her child a better future and a good parent.
At the center, Rita also discovered her passion for reading, so much that she fulfilled the role of the center’s librarian with pleasure and seriousness. From her savings and with the support of her mother, Rita began to buy books and make her own library at home. She also talked about her passion for reading in a radio show. “When I read a book, I feel like I’m part of the story”, she shared with the moderators.
Rita is today a student in the 11th grade at a good high school in Timișoara, following the profile of social sciences, and has future plans in this field. In addition to school, where she continues to achieve good academic results, Rita works part-time to ensure her pocket money. And her mother is by her side as always.
